- Hydration – staying hydrated is crucial to healthy skin. You should make a goal to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to flush the body and skin of toxins and impurities. Hydrated skin is more radiant and less likely to wrinkle (think of a raisin). When the skin is dehydrated, fine lines and wrinkles are more prominent, as well as under-eye circles, and will lead to premature aging.
- Sleep – skin regenerates cells and tissues twice as fast while we sleep than in our waking hours. “Beauty sleep” is not a myth. While you sleep, blood flow is boosted, and the body goes to work to repair the damage done through the day. When we are deprived of sleep, the cells cannot receive the attention that they require to repair cell damage, thus you will look “sickly” with a dull complexion. You should strive for 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Bonus points for using a night cream while you sleep for boosted cell regeneration, and you can use night creams with specific formulations for help with evening of the tone, collagen stimulation, and detoxifying.
- Let your skin breathe – your skin is the largest organ of the body. Just like any other living thing, it requires water, rest, and it must be able to breathe. Remove your makeup before you go to bed and before you work out. I cringe whenever I see one of “those women” who cannot seem to walk into a gym without checking in on Facebook and posting a selfie (why?) and they have on a full face of makeup! Your skin cannot breathe and you are clogging your pores. Makeup contains irritants that cause inflammation. Sweating at the gym opens those pores right up, so those pores are swallowing that makeup right up and that is how you get blackheads. Keep some natural makeup removing wipes in your gym bag and by the bed to help. Pick a day to go natural. If I have a day off and I am out running errands, I will throw on some over-sized sunglasses and lip gloss. My skin appreciates the break. https://theholisticskin.com/let-your-skin-breathe/
You are only as healthy as you eat!
- Exfoliate – using a facial scrub 2-3 times per week will increase cell turnover, minimize fine lines, unclog pores, and slough off surface “crust” made up of dead skin cells and product residue. Do not overdo it. Your skin should feel fresh and smooth, never raw or irritated after you exfoliate. If so, you are using too harsh of an exfoliant for the delicate facial skin. https://theholisticskin.com/exfoliation/
- Healthy diet – Think of your body as a luxury sports car. How well you take care of it and what you put into it greatly affects the car’s long-term value and performance. Your one and only body must be more important than a car, right? Give it good fuel and take good care of it. Diets of soft drinks, fatty/greasy fried foods and foods high in sugar are not going to enhance your body’s performance, appearance or sense of well-being. Feeding your body good, healthy, quality foods free of dyes, preservatives and empty calories will in turn give you great, healthy skin from the inside out. https://theholisticskin.com/best-natural-ingredients-based-on-skin-type/
