Have you ever felt overwhelmed browsing an aisle of skincare products? Looking at hundreds of “miracle-containing” bottles and jars on a shelf with their expansive claims of correcting the vast amount of skin conditions and concerns can leave your head spinning. Often times, we either become discouraged and leave empty-handed, or purchase products that may not be appropriate to address our specific skin concerns. Meaning one more – possibly expensive – product taking up space in our bathroom not being used and those skin concerns still left untreated.
Everyone wants clear, smooth, scar-free, ageless and flawless skin. Your skin, like you, is special and unique. Before you purchase the latest “miracle in a jar“, you need to identify your individual skincare goals and conditions in order to achieve the results that fit you.
The importance of a thorough skin analysis by a licensed skincare professional cannot be stressed enough here. The unlicensed sales consultant behind the counter has been trained to do one thing, sell products from the product line where they work. Whereas an Esthetician has been educated, trained, licensed and certified to assess your skin type, conditions, as well as internal and external factors that could be causing these conditions in order to effectively treat not only the effect, but the cause.
Receiving a proper skin analysis will allow the skincare professional to determine which factors could be contributing to the conditions that are holding you back from achieving your desired results. Lifestyle factors such as nutrition, sleep, hydration and bad habits, as well as genetics, and current skincare practices all play a part in your skin’s overall health and appearance. Professional skin analysis allows for their skill and equipment to evaluate which treatments and product regiments are appropriate for your individual skincare needs to be addressed.
For instance, my greatest concern with my skin may be hormonal breakout and premature aging. During my skin analysis, my Esthetician may remark on my hyperpigmentation and sun damage. As a fair-skinned, freckle-faced, Irish-American, who spent her Summers burning to a crisp on the beaches of Florida, this comes as no great surprise. My face has been peppered with freckles my entire life and as my family has them too, it has just become something I have accepted, but never considered a major skin concern. However, my Esthetician will explain to me that my fair skin and past sun damage puts me at a greater risk for skin cancer. We will discuss the importance of preventing future damage as well as getting my annual skin check up from a Dermatologist to keep an eye out for any suspicious moles or concerns.
Wondering around in a store looking for product, I possibly would have grabbed a spot treatment for breakouts. Whereas in a professional setting, I was given the bigger picture of my skin and potentially life-saving advice regarding my risk of skin cancer. The regiment recommended would be tailored for me specifically. I would be advised on how my diet, stress level, hormones and use of harsh, astringent acne products are the underlying cause of the breakout.
Skincare is not “one size fits all”. Your regiment needs to be individually tailored to meet your specific needs. My combination-sensitive-hormonal-sun damaged skin would not benefit from the same products as a teenager with breakout-prone, oily skin and no signs of aging. While both skins may benefit from a probiotic-based cleanser, the teenager would be more suited for a masque and moisturizer that balances oil production, while my skin would benefit from a masque that corrects premature aging and sun damage and a moisturizer that prevents future damage while leaving my sensitive skin feeling supple and hydrated.
Identifying your individual skin type and concerns with the help of a licensed skincare professional will ensure that you are using the suitable products for your skin. Remember, there is only one of you, and you only have one set of skin, so take care of it and be well!
